General Wofford

As reported previously, Bill Wofford has been named new adjutant general of the Arkansas National Guard by Gov. Mike Beebe.

Governor Mike Beebe today named Major General Bill Wofford as the new Adjutant General for the Arkansas National Guard.

“Major General Wofford has given more than 35 years of his life in service to our nation and has demonstrated exceptional leadership and management skills during that service,” Beebe said.  “Since joining the Arkansas Army National Guard in December 1975, Bill has represented the Guard, Arkansas and the United States with integrity and honor at posts both stateside and overseas.”

            After graduating from Arkansas Tech University in 1971, Wofford served four years on active duty with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and the 1st Armored Division in Germany.  Upon returning to Arkansas, he served 17 years in troop units, commanding at the unit, battalion and brigade levels, including leading the 2nd Battalion, 142nd Field Artillery, VII Corps Artillery during Operation Desert Storm.

            Major General Wofford, 57, has served in Arkansas as the Director of Military Support, coordinating and managing Army and Air National Guard support during state emergencies.  He has also served as the state’s Task Force Commander responsible for Soldier Readiness Processing and mobilization support for more than 4,000 soldiers deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.  Wofford has earned the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal among other numerous decorations.

            Governor Beebe also thanked Major General Ron Chastain for his service as Adjutant General under the previous administration.  Chastain is currently being considered for an assignment at an Army Major Command headquarters.
