Strike three -- UPDATE

A third independent source -- unconnected to two previous tipsters -- says he has it on unimpeachable authority that Mike Huckabee will announce his intentions to run for president as a guest Sunday on Meet the Press with Tim Russert.

Don't expect Russert to be unkind to someone who favors him with a scoop.

Strategery? We already know that Huckabee has appearances scheduled in Iowa next week. With his relatively small treasury, it's a cheap place to campaign with potentially big returns and the Republican caucus there has been friendly to people with solid religious conservative credentials. We'd guess Huckabee will put a tremendous effort into Iowa, hoping for a breakout that entrances the national media and voters. It has happened before, including on the Democratic side.

Let the fun begin. We hope the national press gets up to speed on Huckabee's local record with the energy it delved into Bill Clinton's foibles. Smashed hard drives? Wedding registries? Midnight dole to pals? Payroll padding with relatives? Missing records? Missing furniture and equipment? Comparing himself to Oskar Schindler? Comparing weight loss to a concentration camp? Beating up on "tree-huggers and environmental wackos." Antipathy to same-sex marriage and civil unions except in New Hampshire. Creation science. Forgetting his gambling opposition to let Oaklawn have slot machines and then pocketing a $10,000 contribution. Jetting around with a multi-million-dollar beneficiary of state Medicaid money? Ethical miscues. Dubious pardons. Advocacy for the release of a killer/rapist who killed again?

UPDATE: The Huckabee campaign now confirms that Bro. Mike will be on Meet the Press Sunday to discuss future plans. Please note we told you yesterday. Tell your friends. And call Alice and congratulate her, if you'd like. Number below.
