Why stop then?

Posted By on Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 5:33 AM

Southland Park in West Memphis (why call it a race track any more when it is a slot machine parlor now?) has received permission to expand weekend hours. It will stay open all night Friday and operate continuously through the night Saturday until 5:59 a.m. Sunday, when gambling will stop for four hours.

State law allows 24-hour operation. But Southland says demand for all-night gambling seems to be present now mostly on Friday and Saturday.

NOTE: This item has been corrected from its original form. It had originally said gambling would stop Saturday morning between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. It won't. The change is to take place in August.

Also noted: former state Democratic Party chair Ron Oliver has been picked as the new director of the state Racing Commission, which oversees gambling in the state.
