The TIF miracle

Posted By on Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 4:07 PM

People in Fayetteville know this well -- they see the hole in the ground every day -- but the miraculous downtown hotel redevelopment promised there by some of those miraculous TIF bonds? Well it hasn't happened. And the city is about to have to pick up the ball. I need to check the Iconoclast more often. In case you don't recall, the pitch was that stealing school and other property tax revenue would produce frabjous new projects that would throw off a mighty stream of new revenue. Instead, it appears, Fayetteville is getting trickled on by the bond daddies.

  • Another Republican miracle-working governor

Great piece in Washington Post on the budget crisis in Louisiana. Big tax cuts and corporate welfare will do that to a state, particularly to a state whose previous governor, Republican Bobby Jindal, refused to join the Obamacare-funded Medicaid expansion. There's a lesson there for Arkansas.

I always scan the Little Rock City Board for items of interest this week and this one caught my eye: A zoning measure required by a proposal to tear down the IHOP at Markham and University.
