Getting the spirit

Posted By on Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 8:08 PM

I paid my debt tonight to the Young Republican crew that provided some reports from their buscapade for Mike Huckabee in the Iowa straw poll. We swapped tales over, not PBR as I'd promised, but better quality drinks at Mallard's in the Peabody. The group is enthusiastic about the former governor. They're talking about future trips to Orlando and New Hampshire. Lest you doubt the importance of a home-state base, remember the troops that went to New Hampshire for Bill Clinton. The group is convinced their phone banking paid dividends for Huckabee in Iowa. That kind of feeling spurs more enthusiasm. I'm not ready to sign on, mind you.

Confidential to DBI: Your style was noted. Also note: This group isn't afraid of the likes of you. Not that anything got out of hand. We were chaperoned by a group at the nearby Andy Hawkins Crawford (how'd that happen?) table in Mallards's that included Alcoholic Beverage Control Commissioner Ron Fuller and state Rep. Janet Johnson.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that an ethics complaint has been filed saying that the exploratory committee Rep. Everything that Donald Trump does — make that everything that he says — is calculated to thrill his lustiest disciples. But he is discovering that what was brilliant for a politician is a miscalculation for a president, because it deepens the chasm between him and most Americans.

Watching the Charlottesville spectacle from halfway across the country, I confess that my first instinct was to raillery. Vanilla ISIS, somebody called this mob of would-be Nazis. A parade of love-deprived nerds marching bravely out of their parents' basements carrying tiki torches from Home Depot.
