Though Tim Griffin said in a speech June 14 at the Clinton School that he didn’t expect to return to politics, it was presumed that, at most, he meant that in reference to a personal candidacy. It had been reported earlier in June then that he’d be working for Fred Thompson’s presidential campaign, news that was officially announced Wednesday.

Here’s what’s interesting to me: Griffin’s has a reputation as a hard-charging opposition researcher (and vote cager, less of an issue in a Republican primary). Who will be the likeliest targets for hard-charging research? Mitt Romney, the front-runner, of course. But also the current media darling and key contender for the Religious Right base of the Republican Party, none other than Mike Huckabee. Will Arkansas native Tim go after his homeboy and former employer? Politics ain’t beanbag, somebody said.
