Message for Mike: Truth helps

Posted By on Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 12:38 PM

The Arkansas Leader quotes chapter and verse of the Wayne DuMond fiasco in response to Mike Huckabee's increasingly dishonest retellings of one of his largest lapses in judgment. The editorial's point is not necessary that the DuMond episode is the ultimate deal-breaker for Huckabee's presidential bid, but that his dishonest way of responding might be.

Alas, Mike Huckabee did not learn the most salient political lesson of the last 50 years, one that Richard M. Nixon and Bill Clinton grasped too late: Confronted with an embarrassing lapse in judgment or behavior, tell the unvarnished truth right away and put it behind you. Lies are apt to be exposed and prolong the agony.
