The low state of the GOP

Posted By on Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 6:55 AM

John Brummett examines the weakened Arkansas GOP, which so far hasn't scared up an opponent against U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor. Party Chair Dennis "What we need is another 9/11" Milligan admits what Republicans have been saying for a long time -- there's no point stirring up Pryor's Get Out The Vote effort with a weak candidate as long as Arkansas has a chance of delivering the state to the Republican presidential column. Excited multitudes -- particularly black voters -- marking a ballot for Pryor are certain to vote for the Democratic presidential candidate, Republicans tacitly acknowledge. More small-d democracy through broader vote participation? That's never been part of Republican election strategy in the South. Quite the opposite. See: Timothy Griffin.
