Splitting the black vote

Posted By on Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 5:45 AM

The New York Times examines the division among Southern blacks in the Obama-Clinton contest. Some of it seems to track a generational divide, with younger voters for Obama. My theory is that Hillary will do well to score a decent percentage of that vote, say a third. It's somewhat analagous to a general election contest in Arkansas. The Democratic candidate typically receives more than 90 percent of the black vote. But a candidate who can break that vote stranglehold -- as Mike Huckabee in Arkansas did by getting perhaps a quarter of the black vote in his best showings -- can do well depending on performance in other sectors.

It was not even 24 hours ago that Sophia Said, director of the Interfaith Center; City Director Kathy Webb and others decided to organize a protest today of Donald Trump's executive order that has left people from Muslim countries languishing in airports or unable to come to the US at all — people with visas, green cards,a  post-doc graduate student en route to Harvard, Google employees abroad, families. I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
