State highway dollars at work

Posted By on Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 2:16 PM

The Highway and Transportation Department announced today that the Highway Commission had awarded a $1.6 milion contract to widen Napa Valley Drive in western Little Rock to four lanes between St. Charles Boulevard and Hinson Road and add left-turn lanes at St. Charles.

Good project. But I didn't know the state did work on city streets that are not part of the state highway system. I did know that Highway Commissioner Carl Rosenbaum's son, state Rep. Sid Rosenbaum, lives on Hinson, so I'm sure he has a good idea of the traffic difficulties.

Answer from the Highway Department: The project is being funded by federal money -- and a 20 percent city contribution -- that flows through the state agency. The federal money is available for cities to widen roads, improve bridges, install signals, etc. So. There.
