Junk the touch-screens UPDATE

Posted By on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 5:38 AM

State officials say they're confident about the touch-screen voting machines that will be the predominant machine in almost two-thirds of the state's counties on Super Tuesday. They would say that. They bought the pieces of junk. South Carolina had a big touch-screen debacle yesterday.

It's simple. These things are too prone to foulup. Too prone to manipulation. We should use machines on which voters leave a clear paper trail. The machines that scan hand-marked ballots in Pulaski are probably the best alternative.

UPDATE: As luck would have it, the same day we read of confident Arkansas officials, the NY Times magazine gives you still more reason to doubt their optimism.
