Idle gossip

The gas drillers might -- might, mind you -- be willing to accept a severance tax of about half the 7 percent on market value proposed by former gas company executive Sheffield Nelson, who's threatening to crank up an initiative campaign. Or so I'm told. No word if they'd also expect an even more preferential rate for Fayetteville shale exploration, but I'd predict the answer is yes.

I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
