What it is

Posted By on Fri, May 2, 2008 at 6:32 AM

Isn't it time to stop the euphemisms? What's happening on the gambling machines (24 hours a day at Southland now) and card tables of Oaklawn and Southland is gambling. How else would Southland be able to proudly report that it is taking business from the casinos in Mississippi?

That the industry prefers less-coarse terms -- "gaming" and electronic games of "skill" -- doesn't mean newspaper writers must adopt the PR terms. A striped, fur-bearing mammal is a skunk. A kinder name doesn't dispel its potential for odor.
