A bridge to Argenta

Or a bridge to Little Rock, depending on your point of view.

Assorted dignitaries turned out Saturday morning for the dedication of the new pedestrian link over the Arkansas River on the old Junction Bridge, once a railroad span.

Lots of folks turned out to try it on a splendid spring day. And on to the rest of the day's events. The Little Rock Film Festival drew great crowds at venues large and small.

I've done a tripleheader at the Little Rock Film Festival so far today. "The Promotion" (stars Seann William Scott and John C. Reilly, above, vying for promotions as Chicago supermarket managers) was a sellout and had plenty of laughs. "Lioness" was another moving tribute to the sacrifices of our troops in Iraq, particularly female troops, and included a guest appearance by Shannon Morgan, the soldier from Mena, who's a key character in the documentary about women in unexpected combat roles. "Beyond the Call," a documentary about three Americans who mount independent relief efforts in godforsaken places also was a winner.

It was a tutorial on sharp views of race, class and governance in Little Rock.

  • Another Republican miracle-working governor

Great piece in Washington Post on the budget crisis in Louisiana. Big tax cuts and corporate welfare will do that to a state, particularly to a state whose previous governor, Republican Bobby Jindal, refused to join the Obamacare-funded Medicaid expansion. There's a lesson there for Arkansas.

Look, the Great Campus Rape Crisis was mainly hype all along. What Vice President Joe Biden described as an epidemic of sexual violence sweeping American college campuses in 2011 was vastly overstated.
