Memorial Day observances

Posted By on Sun, May 25, 2008 at 5:20 PM

Tradiitional observances will be held in Little Rock on Monday, Memorial Day, but the locations have been changed to the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery.

Details on the jump.

After 31 years at the Broadway Bridge and over 35 years at the Little Rock National Cemetery, we are moving the State Memorial Day Ceremony to the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery, 1501 West Maryland in North Little Rock at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 26, 2008.  We will combine both the traditional ceremonies that were held at the Broadway Bridge and the Little Rock National Cemetery into one new event.  Governor Mike Beebe will give the address.  Also, in attendance will be Senator Mark Pryor, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, Master of Ceremonies Mr. Mike Nuckolls State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the 106th Arkansas Army National Guard Band, the Little Rock Air Force Base Honor Guard, Major General William Wofford, Adjutant General of the Arkansas Army National Guard, Brigadier General Rowayne A. Schatz, Jr., Commander of the Little Rock Air Force Base, and the Presidents and Commanders of all the state’s veterans organizations.

The location is being changed because the Little Rock National Cemetery, which opened in 1868, is closed for initial burials and the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery, which opened in 2001, will be conducting burials for the next 120 years.  The Little Rock National Cemetery will still be open on Memorial Day for visitation.

Parking will be available at Camp Robinson through their Maryland Avenue gate, within the cemetery and at Central Arkansas Water.  Transportation will be provided to and from the parking lots.

The Governor will hold his annual Memorial Day picnic at the mansion following the ceremony.  All are invited and encouraged to attend this day of remembrance for all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
