Deputies punished for arrest

Posted By on Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 10:36 AM

We wrote a month ago about an ACLU complaint against Pulaski County deputies who arrested a woman who, in her own home, refused to produce an identification. Deputies were called to the home by a civil process server who said the woman, Jana Baldridge, had been verbally abusive. The process server was looking for another woman. Baldridge told him she didn't live there.

The obstruction charge against Baldridge, who was represented by the ACLU, was dismissed shortly after her arrest. But the sheriff's office began an internal investigation.

It has been completed, spokesman John Rehrauer said. The result: Deputies Michael Woody and Richard Jones were given a one-day suspension for failing to promote and display a positive image of the department. A third deputy who was present was in training at the time and was not punished. Rehrauer said it was within department rules for deputies to respond to the process server's complaint, but they should have left without making an arrest after assessing the situation they found.
