Crime watch

Posted By on Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 4:29 PM

The U.S. attorney has been busy today. Jane Duke announced:

* The indictment of Craig Hagerty, 48 and his wife, Angela, 38, of Russeville on an eight-count tax evasion indicment. They are alleged to have avoided $1.4 million in taxes between 1999 and 2004 by setting up offshore entities to unlawfully avoid the tax man.

* Stacy Lynn Tucker, 40, a former band director in Izard County who now lives in Fayetteville, was sentenced to four years in prison and 25 years of supervised release on child pornography charges. He's another one trapped by a police officer -- this one in Oxford, Miss. -- posing as an underage girl.

* Justin Ray, 20, of Pine Bluff, was indicted for taking $200 in an armed robbery of the Gould Postoffice of $200 July 22.

State Auditor Andrea Lea, who began her tenure in statewide office with a degree of competence unseen in some other Republican counterparts (think Treasurer Dennis Milligan particularly), is becoming more deeply mired in a political scandal.

  • Another Republican miracle-working governor

Great piece in Washington Post on the budget crisis in Louisiana. Big tax cuts and corporate welfare will do that to a state, particularly to a state whose previous governor, Republican Bobby Jindal, refused to join the Obamacare-funded Medicaid expansion. There's a lesson there for Arkansas.
