Both sides now

Posted By on Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 9:42 AM

John McCain's campaign chief has reached out to gay Republicans, who generally were accorded more respect at this year's Republican National Convention. He noted his lesbian sister in his remarks to Log Cabin Republicans. That's all nice to read about.

But ... The rubber meets the road in campaigning and pronouncements on relevant issues. The current president, Dick Cheney, has a lesbian daughter. You know how much tolerance that has produced on an official level. Still, quoting Steve Schmidt:

In his brief remarks, Schmidt weaved in a personal anecdote about his lesbian sister and her relationship to him, his wife, and his children. “On a personal level, my sister and her partner are an important part of my life and our children’s life,” he said. “I admire your group and your organization and I encourage you to keep fighting for what you believe in because the day is going to come.”
