Obama numbers crunching

Posted By on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 11:17 AM

Nate Silver continues to crunch presidential election number. Here, he's looking at the correlation between the percentage of black voters in a Southern states and the percentage of white voters who voted for Obama. The blacker the state the smaller the percentage of the white vote, generally speaking.

I noted one mildly positive thing. In Arkansas, 30 percent of white voters favored Obama. Could have been a lot worse. Other lower percentages in the South and region: Oklahoma (29); South Carolina (26); Texas (26); Georgia (23); Louisiana (14); Mississippi (11); Alabama (10).

Better: Florida (42); Missouri (42); Virginia (39); Kentucky (36); North Carolina (35); Tennessee (34).

Maybe we could adopt the motto that Calvin Trillin, I think, once suggested for New Jersey:

"Arkansas: Could be worse"

  • Trump immigration protest at LR: Quick and fierce

It was not even 24 hours ago that Sophia Said, director of the Interfaith Center; City Director Kathy Webb and others decided to organize a protest today of Donald Trump's executive order that has left people from Muslim countries languishing in airports or unable to come to the US at all — people with visas, green cards,a  post-doc graduate student en route to Harvard, Google employees abroad, families. I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
