Good news on crime front

City officials yesterday told members of the Downtown Neighborhood Association that copper thefts are down. They credit a new city ordinance that requires a thumbprint of anyone selling scrap to city dealers. It is good news, the DNA was told, that only 17 thefts were reported in the last month. (Not so good if you were one of 17 victims.)

I was thinking about copper thefts yesterday. I was complimenting Library Director Bobby Roberts on the copper sheathing, shown above, installed on the facade of the library's new Arkansas studies center nearing completion on Clinton Avenue. (That's next door to a River Market parking lot that could be a shiny new $20 million Aloft Hotel if only Roberts and the anti-competitive Stephens family would allow it.) Roberts said the copper was firmly attached. He better hope for industrial grade epoxy. Those copper thieves are wily.
