The perpetual campaign

Posted By on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 6:34 AM

House speakers have been decided well ahead of time since forever. For years, though,  it was sort of an informal sign-up process that generally produced a winner that passed around at least partly on longevity.

No more. Term limits and the need to accrue power and achievements quickly has changed all that. So it is that the race for House Speaker 2011 is well underway. Leading candidates are Reps. Robert Moore and Johnnie Roebuck. Update here. Byproducts can include serious horse trading in current legislative affairs, campaign contributions and assorted other political skulduggery.

  • Another Republican miracle-working governor

Great piece in Washington Post on the budget crisis in Louisiana. Big tax cuts and corporate welfare will do that to a state, particularly to a state whose previous governor, Republican Bobby Jindal, refused to join the Obamacare-funded Medicaid expansion. There's a lesson there for Arkansas.
