LR schools weigh charters

Posted By on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 8:10 AM

The Little Rock School District continues to examine the harm done to the district by the Walton- and Hussman-financed charter school assault on district enrollment. The court remains in a desegregation lawsuit that predates changing Supreme Court dictates in school cases. State actions that contribute to segregation, as the charter schools clearly do, are suspect as a result.

The district's attorney, Chris Heller, has circulated information to the Board on

1) possible claims against the state

2) possible remedies

3) some ideas on changes in the state charter school law to put the district on an even footing with the charters. They are aimed at insuring that both types of schools have some of the same obligations -- providing transportation, for example, and serving a similar population of students, i.e., including the difficult ones.

Let the howls from the LRSD haters begin. But the points are worth considering by the fair-minded, even if some are likely non-starters.
