Doing the math

Posted By on Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 12:24 AM

Running through my e-mail, I've come across a note asking for further examination of NLR Mayor Hays' claim that a new hotel downtown -- with its schoolkid-financed parking deck -- would create 350 jobs.

How exactly? About four for the parking deck. A couple of maids per floor, generously. A few managers. Will it have a restaurant? Maybe 30 employees. My correspondent can't figure how you get more than 100 new jobs any way you slice it. I'm a little far removed from the scene. Perhaps Mr. Peppas over at the NLR Times could give a look at that bodacious job claim. (Construction jobs swell the number, but only temporarily.)
