It must be Belgium UPDATE

Posted By on Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 10:10 AM

I've made the switch from Amsterdam to Belgium, thanks to the to-the-minute trains of Europe. Language barrier will be a little higher here, I judge from some early unintentional comedy routines.

I'm going to be out of pocket for a good while, though. I think some others will appear from time to time.

Meanwhile, I presume everyone is sleeping off a riotous New Year's Eve. Amsterdam was the damnedest thing I'd ever experienced. I had gone to sleep before midnight, but was rocked out of bed by mortar, rocket and small arms fire-type explosions that resonated off the brick faces of the canal houses. The din continued for a good hour. The streets this morning were covered with fireworks refuse. An unbelievable experience.

UPDATE: For those who like that sort of thing, I've posted some Belgium food porn on the Eat Arkansas blog after a promising opening dinner.

In the happy news today: It really looks like Al Franken is going to win, though Norm Coleman will be suing forever.

Hillary Clinton's campaign for president illustrates again the double standard applied to women. Some writers get it. They even find the supposedly unlikable Clinton inspiring.
