Cigarettes and health

Brummett writes today of the coalition that will be necessary to put together a bullet-proof (75 percent vote) coalition to raise the cigarette tax to pay for trauma care and (to bring other votes) other community health services.

This is good thinking. I add a cautionary note. Community health programs are good things, but they can be abused by unscrupulous operators who use the cloak of good deeds to line their pockets through exorbitantly billed and sometimes unnecessary or shoddy services. I could tell you about a couple of such operators in the field as we speak. I guess I'm saying -- Trust with public money, but verify.

Noted: Roby Brock says Jack Critcher will be lobbying for community health centers.

Also, lobbyists for a major tobacco company called me yesterday about a visit on the cigarette tax. Lest you wondered, they will not be going quietly on this issue.
