Give us your poor... UPDATE

Posted By on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 9:47 AM

Here's Rep. Billl Sample's anti-immigrant bill, fresh in the hopper. It begins with a lie, that immigration can lead to "economic hardship." The facts are that the immigrant workforce is a plus for Arkansas.

It's the bad Oklahoma law writ even worse. Pick up an undocumented hitchhiker and you have committed a Class D felony. It will put the State Police in the immigrant identification business. Etc. Going to be a whale of a fight. The demagoguery will be of the highest order.

UPDATE: Speaker Wills has sent the bill to the Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Steve Harrelson. The belief among opponents is that this shoulld prove the bill's death knell.

I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
