God and student at Fountain Lake

Posted By on Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 3:04 PM

I'd written earlier about a complaint that the Fountain Lake School District gave the appearance that a new building was a facility for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The school district attorney disputed the complaint from Americans United for Separation of Church and State. He said, mainly, that the general use building merely had a sign announcing a regular meeting there of FCA, just as others could do.

A tipster reports that the school has cleaned up its act -- a little. Here's some background first. (Broken link fixed.)

Says our reader:

Last week the school covertly removed a Bible verse from the metal plaque to the right of the big purple sign in question.  This occurred last Wednesday or Thursday, after the notification from AU was received.  (Curiously, AU's complaint mentions only the purple sign containing "Fellowship of Christian Athletes meets here!" with cross in logo, and doesn't even mention the smaller plaque also mentioning FCA with the now-removed Bible verse.)

Wednesday the Sentinel Record took a picture of both signs - the small plaque at that point contained the Bible verse and appeared in a front page picture Thursday.

As of filming on Thursday, the verse had been removed:

Bolts in the building show that the plaque is now shorter.

The school is being disingenuous by saying it's done nothing unconstitutional. Clearly, they felt the Bible verse caused them legal concern.  Also, this removal was done covertly before the school board met on Saturday to officially discuss the issue.  The board will meet again Thursday at 5 p.m. and has a public comment section open for questions from anyone.

The verse now cut off from the plaque was:

“Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal, the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus. Phil. 3:13-14.”

  • Where's the outrage?

Am I the only person, apart from federal prosecutors, outraged about the criminal enterprise that inveigled itself into a privileged position as an Arkansas taxpayer-financed human services provider to the tune, today, of $43 million a year?
