All seem in agreement that the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees will not pick Stanley Reed today to succeed Alan Sugg as president of the system, as trustee Jim Lindsey had hoped to accomplish.

A member of the Board of Trustees said flatly that there will be a national search for the position first. Lindsey said as much in the D-G article.

Whether that means Sugg or the Board will discuss the succession issue today in executive session is still an open question. We'll be checking. Sugg, who is nearing 71, has a contract through June 2010 and says he plans to give at least a year's notice on retirement. That time period is almost at hand.

Interesting note: The Democrat-Gazette today followed up reporting here and by John Brummett on this topic. Our work was credited in the Little Rock edition's version of the article. No mention in the Northwest Arkansas version posted on the web. That version makes it seem as if the subject of Sugg's retirement and the mention of Reed as a possible successor were little more than passing rumor. After speaking directly with, or through representatives of, five members of the Board of Trustees, I can say confidently that Lindsey, who employs Reed as manager of his farmland, had a deal in the works. But it met strong resistance from at least four trustees.
