KATV's Black Friday

Arkansas TV News blog names on-air talent Steve Powell and veteran program director Richard Farrester, with something like 30 years at the station, as among the casualties of the round of layoffs and pay cuts announced at KATV yesterday.

Comment: When a news organization, a long-time market leader at that, won't man up and at least give a perfunctory statement about a big local business story, you wonder why they should expect others to answer THEIR questions.

Shame on GM Dale Nicholson. In his shaky defense, the station is owned by Allbritton, which made similar cuts yesterday, including the 3.9 percent staffwide pay cuts, in stations in Washington and Tulsa and few details were forthcoming in those cities either. The silence apparently was enforced from the top, the same leadership that ordered Nicholson on air to endorse George Bush back in 2004.

I went to the Choose Your News blog on KATV yesterday and posted a comment asking them to cover this story. I can't seem to find the comment this morning.
