Buried in news of Toyota woes was the disclosure that the Japanese autoaker has indefinitely postponed the opening of an assembly plant in Tupelo, Miss. It may never open.
This was the assembly plant Arkansas thought it might land. No word if Mississippi will be able to recapture any of the millions it has already spent luring the plant to the state. It is a sharp illustration, as if one was needed, of the wisdom of states’ including clawback agreements in corporate welfare giveaways. Sometimes, they don’t work out.
