Top of the morning

Posted By on Fri, Feb 13, 2009 at 6:22 AM

Is there anyone more shameless than Pulaski County elected officials? I read this morning that they are lobbying again for 3 percent bonuses for themselves and other county employees. They got a 3 percent bonus less than six months ago. They got a 5 percent pay raise last year, too. All this in the midst of a recession that has seen mass layoffs, reductions in hours and belt-tightening in virtually every cranny of the U.S., except, apparently, Pulaski County government. A precious few of the rest of the workforce enjoy the defined benefit retirement plan, generously subsidized health plan and generous holiday benefits that county workers enjoy.

No mention yet if the county workers also expect another 5 percent pay raise this year. If I know these JPs, I'd guess the answer is yes.

You'd think the county has finished the job on making the county jail sufficient for the criminal demand and now has money to throw around. Or that it has invested sufficiently to protect the Lake Maumelle watershed. Oh, right, it can't afford to do that.
