Legislative notes

Posted By on Fri, Feb 13, 2009 at 11:29 AM

Fridays tend to be slow at the Capitol. John Williams reports on highlights so far:

* Rep. Dan Greenberg's bill to open the criminal information database to inspection in the case of criminal records of elected officials and people seeking public office failed the House 33-56. Greenberg had made some changes that would have charged a fee and placed stricter limits on which people could be checked. Attorney General Dustin McDaniel opposed the measure. A House memo circulating today said the bill had cleared committee "inadvertently," which contributed to the negative outcome.

* HB 1383, which would have allowed the state contracting board to fine contracters who knowingly hire undocumented workers, failed in the House State Agencies committee. The State Contracting Board spoke against it. They said they weren't comfortable acting as an investigator of immigration.
