'Rent' faces controversy

Know any Arkansas high school putting on the newly available school version of the hit musical "Rent"? Don't spread it around.

The subject matter of the play is making it a subject of controversy all over -- too explicit for the Comstocks who'd prefer not to acknowledge that young people have sex, take drugs, contract communicable diseases, etc. A demoralized drama teacher in California -- California! -- is going to substitute "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown."

Good grief.

I must admit with some embarrassment that I had a front-row Broadway seat for "Rent" and slept through a good portion of it, crashing guitar chords and all. That's commentary on me, not the play.
