Coming soon to a campus near you

Posted By on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 6:06 AM

A New York Times trend story today looks at painful job cuts and other alterations underway as major state public research universities scale back plans for growth. Has the drive to become a major research institution overshadowed a state's mission to provide solid undergraduate education? Should more resources go, rather than to the major colleges, to less expensive forms of education, such as community colleges?

Arkansas -- UCA's self-inflicted money woes an exception -- isn't caught up in this trend. Yet. But there are parallels here. What happens elsewhere generally reaches Arkansas eventually.
