Re Beebe's numbers: Oops

Posted By on Wed, Mar 25, 2009 at 1:41 PM

There was more to the dismal economic news at Joint Budget today than a reworking of general revenue forecasts.

Roby Brock at Talk Business details a bigger story -- what now looks like a big exaggeration of the amount expected to be produced by the tobacco tax increase. The new federal tobacco tax is being blamed. But there are questions aplenty: Where will money come from to pay for promised health programs? What other programs might suffer to make up the shortfall? Has the administration been shooting straight all along on budget numbers?

Beebe's stock could take at least a small hit from today's developments.

Great piece in Washington Post on the budget crisis in Louisiana. Big tax cuts and corporate welfare will do that to a state, particularly to a state whose previous governor, Republican Bobby Jindal, refused to join the Obamacare-funded Medicaid expansion. There's a lesson there for Arkansas.
