You need not be a kid or Cub Scout to join in Thursday night’s inaugural Rock Candy 500, the Times-sponsored all-ages Pinewood Derby contest at the River Market. For the little kid in everyone and open to all. This is the brainchild of David Koon, who’s as able a woodcrafter as he is a wordscrafter, and Rock Candy’s impresario, Lindsey Millar.

As luck would have it, my son’s “Plum Loco” Derby entry of yore has been aging carefully in the garage for 15 years or so. A touch of graphite and it’s ready to go. Proceeds benefit the Easter Seals Scout troop. 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Refreshments. Etc.

(Hobby stores sell kits to make your own racer. They also — don’t tell — sell them pre-made.)
