Booze bias?

Posted By on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 6:21 AM

A lobby group, the Dry County Coalition, has formed to combat what it sees as a pro-alcohol bias on the part of state Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Well, sure, but the problem (if it is one) starts with the legislature. Some crafty law changes have opened the private club artifice to taverns in every dusty crossroads burg and the ABC has little option but to approve the applications as they come. Similarly, Sunday drinking arrived by nearly secret legislative decree of the recently concluded session. The booze lobby is powerful. More permitted establishments with longer hours mean more sales (and more state tax revenue.) In time, mark these words, Wal-Mart will not be limited to one package store in Arkansas, Dry County Coalition or no.
