Leroy Donald dies at 73

Posted By on Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 4:57 PM

Leroy Donald, 73, the veteran Arkansas journalist who wrote a weekly business column in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, died Thursday.

I first met Leroy when he was the state editor of the Arkansas Gazette. In addition to the statewide contacts he made in that job, he built a vast network of friends through his long leadership of the Farkleberry Follies, the biannual musical that raised money for journalism scholarships.

His friends have organized a remembrance gathering from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Afterthought, one of Leroy's old haunts. Ruebel Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Here's the feature obit on Leroy from the Sunday D-G. The funeral home notice is on the jump.

LEROY DONALD JR., age 73, of Little Rock, died July 2, 2009. Hewas born in Albany, Miss., on Aug. 23, 1935 to the late Leroy Sr. and Mahala Ford Donald. Leroy attended the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He was a member of the Sigma Nu social fraternity and the Sigma Delta Chi journalism fraternity. Leroy was a respected newspaper reporter and writer for the former Arkansas Gazette and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Leroy was a gregarious character who loved people. His fun loving spirit will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his brother, Bill Donald and his wife Francis, his four children, Leroy Donald III, Rebecca Batsel, Joe Elam, and Richard Elam. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and his beloved cat, Little Man.

There will be a celebration of Leroy’s life on Thursday evening from 5-8 p.m. at The Afterthought, 2721 Kavanaugh Blvd., in Little Rock.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pulaski County Humane Society, the Little Rock Public Library System or to a charity of your choice. Cremation arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.
