Young Repub flap goes national

Posted By on Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 6:46 AM

The Arkansas Blog broke an internal Republican political story last week about racial remarks on the Facebook page of an Arkansas native, Audra Shay, who's running for leadership of the National Young Republicans.

As happens, the spat has gone viral, with a major takeout now on the popular national website Daily Beast (helped by some continuing racist remarks from Shay's "friends" on Facebook.) Also Huffington Post. And also Gawker, with good comment string. Daily Beast summarizes:

After "Barack the Magic Negro" and other GOP racial gaffes, a top Young Republican official—who hopes to be elected chairman Saturday—laughs at a racial slur about President Obama. The Daily Beast's John Avlon on a choice facing GOP brass: lose the radical fringe, or never email, use social media or send out holiday CDs again.
