Philander's outreach to black men

Posted By on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 8:15 AM

Here's a good and extensive article in Inside Higher Education about the effort by Dr. Walter Kimbrough, the dynamic president of historically black Philander Smith College in Little Rock, to improve the school's graduation rate, particularly among black men.

The article notes that "black male initiatives" are not without controversy. Some view this targeted extra effort as racist and sexist, no matter the demonstrated gap. Philander is lauded for increasing its retention and graduation rates (in part thanks to tougher admission policies).

  • Cats and dogs

I've always been leery of people who dislike animals. To my wife and me, a house without dog hair in the corners and a cat perched on the windowsill is as barren as a highway rest stop. We're down to three dogs and two cats, the smallest menagerie we've had for years.
