Cash for clunkers

Posted By on Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 11:29 AM

The government's program to give you up to $4,500 to take an old gas-guzzler off the street and replace it with a more fuel efficient car is up and running. Rules here. Dealers are pushing the $1 billion program (when it's gone, it's gone) in advertising.

Here's a question I haven't been able to answer. I have a perfect clunker. If I buy a car with it, can I flip it to profit on the credit (minus sales tax, of course). Why not just sell it as a used car? It's a clunker. Not worth much. But it does run, as the clunker program requires.
