Deaths in the family

Posted By on Sun, Jul 26, 2009 at 8:16 AM

Publisher Alan Leveritt asked that I pass along sad news concerning former members of our publishing family. The sons of former Little Rock residents Linton and Jan Taylor Weeks -- Stone, 24, and Holt, 20 -- were killed Thursday night on Interstate 81 in Virginia when their car was struck by a truck that failed to stop in time for a traffic backup. They were en route to Washington to see their parents and attend a book party for historian Douglas Brinkley, for whom Stone Weeks had worked as a researcher.

Linton Weeks was the founding editor of the late Southern Magazine, published in Little Rock from 1986 to 1989, when it was bought by Time-Warner then folded. He's now a national correspondent for NPR.

One of the booths at this week's Ark-La-Tex Medical Cannabis Expo was hosted by the Arkansas Hemp Association, a trade group founded to promote and expand non-intoxicating industrial hemp as an agricultural crop in the state. AHA Vice President Jeremy Fisher said the first licenses to grow experimental plots of hemp in the state should be issued by the Arkansas State Plant Board next spring.
  • Cats and dogs

I've always been leery of people who dislike animals. To my wife and me, a house without dog hair in the corners and a cat perched on the windowsill is as barren as a highway rest stop. We're down to three dogs and two cats, the smallest menagerie we've had for years.
