Big Hucking deal

Posted By on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 11:31 AM

Mike Huckabee got a big ride in some quarters for leading a weekend straw poll of Religious Righters on 2012 Republican presidential candidates. It was front-page news in the Democrat-Gazette, which double-teamed the event with both a D.C. bureau reporter and its religion writer.

Time magazine isn't impressed. Does it matter? Time asks.

Not really. Or, even less than it usually means to win an unscientific poll of an incredibly small and relatively unrepresentative group of people. Yes, Mike Huckabee won the Values Voters Summit straw poll this weekend with 28% of the vote. But then again, he's been the frontrunner for Preferred Candidate of Religious Conservatives in 2012 since the moment the last election ended.

In short: If the Religious Right elects the president, the Huckster is looking good. (The rest of us? Not so much.)
