GOP straw men

Posted By on Mon, Sep 28, 2009 at 5:57 PM

The Republican Party of Arkansas is planning a straw poll on the U.S. Senate race in December in Hot Springs. It will raise money. It might draw a little attention. If the number of candidates holds steady, just votes by kith and kin should put together a healthy kitty. (Get a Duggar in there and the sky's the limit.)

Candidates must respond by tomorrow.

This is the work, by the way, of Chase Dugger, the party's political director, who I told you over the weekend had been picked to be the party's new executive director. An official news release on that was issued today. Said a release:

“2010 is going to be a great year for the Republican Party” said Dugger.  “We are going to pick up seats at the local, state, and national level.  I am excited about being a part of that and look forward to seeing the Party grow in Arkansas.”

United States Senate
Republican Primary Straw Poll
Senate Candidates,
The Republican Party of Arkansas is pleased to announce that we will be holding a U.S. Senate candidate straw poll on Saturday December 5th, during our Republican Leadership weekend.
While the details are a work in progress, the poll will be similar in structure to the Iowa Presidential straw poll.  Voters will have to purchase tickets, and candidates will be allowed to buy blocks of tickets for their supporters.
We will notify each of you once all qualification and participation guidelines for speaking at the event are set.  All announced candidates will be included on the straw poll ballot, even if you choose not to participate in the other activities surrounding the event.
We ask that you, or someone directly related to your campaign, respond to this email by 4pm tomorrow, Tuesday, September 29, 2009 so that we can ensure all candidates are aware of our decision to have this straw poll.
Who: All Republican U.S. Senate Candidates
What: U.S. Senate Republican Primary Straw Poll
When: Saturday, December 5th, 2009
Where: Arlington Hotel and Convention Center, Hot Springs Arkansas

A followup to Rebekah Hall's earlier report on Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr.'s announcement that cuts will be necessary in the city budget in part to pay for "priorities," such as his desire to expand the police force, but also to deal with the reality often mentioned here of stagnant to decling city sales tax revenue. Some quick ideas on that:

Word continues to filter in of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's pullback from statewide circulation of a print daily edition of the newspaper — the latest from the Hot Springs area, just 50 or so miles down the road from Little Rock. Subscribers there were told home delivery of a print paper would end in May.
