Abortion and health care

Posted By on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 6:28 AM

An explanation of the abortion angle in the current health legislation debate.

Opponents would prevent use of government subsidies to buy insurance if that policy covered abortion. The personal impact would be most damaging on the difficult cases -- mothers threatened by pregnancies carried to term; fetuses with little likelihood of survival.

Abortion-rights supporters say such a restriction would all but eliminate from the marketplace private plans that cover the procedure, pushing women who have such coverage to give it up. Nearly half of those with employer-sponsored health plans now have policies that cover abortion, according to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Your non-intrusive "conservatives" at work, crafting government policy to effectively eliminate access to a legal service. If it craters health legislation, all the better many of them think.
