Full blogger disclosure

Posted By on Mon, Oct 5, 2009 at 10:55 AM

The Federal Trade Commission has issued a rule requiring bloggers to disclose when they receive payments or free goods for reviewing a product.

I get it. (Not freebies, but the idea.) But why focus just on bloggers?

The so-called mainstream media are showered with freebies in expectation of coverage. To name a few: Books, movies, trips to exotic destinations, cars to test-drive for extended periods, electronic gadgetry, wine, gourmet foods. Some media are better than others about taking freebies. Some are better than others about disclosure that they've received goods being written about. I'd like to see disclosure, particularly, on subsidized travel "journalism." I suspect there'd be a lot less to read without the freebies.
