Halter mailing: Legal but smelly

Posted By on Thu, Oct 22, 2009 at 6:15 AM

John Brummett indicates the Ethics Commission made the right call in dismissing an ethics complaint that Lt. Gov. Bill Halter had violated law by sending out a public relations brochure for his office. It wasn't campaign literature, so it wasn't a foul. But Brummett looks askance at the practice.

Every public official promotes his/her wonderfulness, of course. See Gov. Beebe's website for the most excessive example. But it's not even "close," as the Ethics Commission indicated, to say that these PR gestures are unlawful if there's no overt campaigning, particularly out of election season. In time, the worst offenders highlight themselves and give voters ample material to make their own judgments. Remember when Bill McCuen personally branded just about everything that passed through the Capitol?

  • UPDATE: Hutchinson moves to cover himself on cut to War Memorial Stadium

Gov. Asa Hutchinson apparently felt the burn from KARK's exclusive Tuesday night on his plans to cut state support of War Memorial Stadium in half beginning July 1, 2018. He has a so-far secret plan to make the stadium self-sustaining. We bet that doesn't include state support.
