Gory days for newspapers

Posted By on Mon, Oct 26, 2009 at 12:34 PM

I said gory.

Daily newspaper circulation dropped, on average, more than 10 percent in the six months ending Sept. 30, taking total circulation to pre-World War II lows.

Here's an interesting anomaly. Among the 10 newspapers with circulation of more than 50,000 that showed gains in the six months ending Sept. 30 was the Chattanooga Times Free Press, a newspaper controlled by Arkansas Democrat-Gazette publisher Walter Hussman. Hussman has been getting national attention for pushing for paid access to websites as a way to protect the franchise of print newspapers. You must pay to read all D-G content on-line. The Chattanooga paper, however, doesn't currently charge for web access, not even to read obituaries, highly popular with out-of-town web readers. Just saying.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson apparently felt the burn from KARK's exclusive Tuesday night on his plans to cut state support of War Memorial Stadium in half beginning July 1, 2018. He has a so-far secret plan to make the stadium self-sustaining. We bet that doesn't include state support.
