A coach for Central High?

Posted By on Thu, Dec 10, 2009 at 10:29 AM

The Little Rock School Board will have a special meeting tonight to consider creating a new full-time position at Central High for the remainder of the year to hire a football coach  to succeed Bernie Cox.

I'm trying to find out who the nominee -- or nominees -- might be. Interviews have been underway for several weeks. I had this item wrong originally. A School District spokesman said the vote tonight is just on creating the position, not on filling the job. Sorry.

Tipster Andrew Bagley says:

Helena-West Helena Central Coach Russell Smith is expected to interview for the LR Central position next week.  The Helena-West Helena community wants  to keep Russell in Helena-West Helena.  The Cougars are 28-18-1 under the 34-year-old Smith, who was hired by Rudolph Howard [former Central High principal] while the state was in control.  He brought home the first conference title in 60 years in 2008 and the school's only appearance in the state final during the modern era of the playoffs.

The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality has denied a new permit for the C&H Hog Farms' concentrated animal feeding operation near Mount Judea (Newton County). This is a big and somewhat surprising victory for critics who have viewed C&H's large-scale pig farm and the pig waste it generates as an existential threat to the Buffalo National River.
