WM3 judge shoots from lip

Posted By on Mon, Dec 28, 2009 at 10:37 AM

Retired Circuit Judge David Burnett, an announced candidate for state Senate next year, has given an interview to the Jonesboro Sun (link changed to reflect a Sun website update) about the West Memphis Three murder case. He's currently considering petitions for post-conviction relief.

In the interview, Burnett defends his often criticized work on the case. I think it's fair to conclude that he doesn't sound like a judge inclined to grant the defendants any relief.

UPDATE: Though railroading the WM3 is more likely to help Burnett than hurt him in his district, it's a piece of a broader judicial record that has earned Burnett varied critics. Being injudicious, whatever the side of the case, isn't a high recommendation. The news is that Burnett will have a Democratic opponent -- long-time Blytheville Mayor Barrett Harrison.
